THE PSYCHOLOGICAL IMPACT OF JAPA: MENTAL HEALTH CHALLENGES AMONG FAMILIES LEFT BEHIND.
THE PSYCHOLOGICAL IMPACT OF JAPA: MENTAL HEALTH CHALLENGES AMONG FAMILIES LEFT BEHIND.
Chapter One: Introduction
Background of the Study
The Japa phenomenon, characterized by the large-scale emigration of Nigerians seeking better opportunities abroad, has significant psychological impacts on the families left behind. As individuals, including family members, migrate to foreign countries, the psychological strain on those remaining in Nigeria can be profound and multifaceted (Oladipo & Mojisola, 2021).
Families left behind may experience a range of mental health challenges due to separation and the emotional burden of dealing with loved ones who are geographically distant. The psychological effects can include feelings of abandonment, loneliness, anxiety, and depression. The stress of managing family responsibilities alone, combined with the uncertainty of the migrant's situation abroad, can exacerbate these mental health issues (Abiola & Adebayo, 2022).
Moreover, the migration of individuals often leads to changes in family dynamics, which can affect the mental well-being of family members. The emotional strain can be compounded by financial pressures and the potential for social isolation. These factors can contribute to an increase in mental health issues among families left behind (Nkechi & Chukwuemeka, 2020).
This study aims to investigate the psychological impact of Japa on families left behind in Nigeria, focusing on mental health challenges such as anxiety, depression, and emotional distress. By exploring these impacts, the study seeks to provide insights into how emigration affects mental health and offer recommendations for addressing related challenges.
Statement of the Problem
The Japa phenomenon has led to significant psychological challenges for families left behind in Nigeria. The emotional burden of separation, coupled with changes in family dynamics and financial pressures, contributes to mental health issues such as anxiety and depression. This study seeks to examine the extent of these psychological impacts and explore strategies for addressing mental health challenges among families affected by Japa.
Objectives of the Study
To assess the impact of family separation due to migration on mental health among families left behind in Nigeria.
To evaluate the effects of changes in family dynamics and financial pressures on the psychological well-being of families left behind.
To explore strategies for supporting the mental health of families affected by the Japa phenomenon.
Research Questions
How does family separation due to migration impact mental health among families left behind in Nigeria?
What are the effects of changes in family dynamics and financial pressures on the psychological well-being of families left behind?
What strategies can be implemented to support the mental health of families affected by the Japa phenomenon?
Research Hypotheses
Ho1: Family separation due to migration does not significantly impact the mental health of families left behind in Nigeria.
Ho2: Changes in family dynamics and financial pressures do not significantly affect the psychological well-being of families left behind.
Ho3: Strategies implemented to support the mental health of families affected by the Japa phenomenon do not significantly improve psychological well-being.
